Learning How Our Rings Are Made

The blue and black material above is hard wax.  It is used by our jewelry model makers as the media for carving our celtic rings and crosses.  The large cylinder and block is the raw material.

Above are two examples of current hand carved "waxes" and the knotwork designed to compliment each "shank" or ring body.  The knotwork is made of wax covered metal wire.

These carved models will actually be "lost" in the creation of the first metal "model" that will then be used to make the mold used to cast the finished piece.  This is where the term "lost wax" method comes from.
